EAD: Encoded Archival Description-Version 2002 Official Site
Subject

Web archiving
Description
An account of the resource
The official website of Encoded Archival Description (EAD), details the history and evolution of this essential finding aid for archives and archival holdings. The site also includes principles and guidelines for each EAD version, tools and helper files, articles, and a link to the EAD listserve. Finally, the site discusses a recently developed schema for archives, the EAD-CPF (Corporate bodies, Persons and Families), which provides additional contextual information regarding the creators of the archival materials. Although the technical information regarding the schema structure, application, and tools is clearly written and accessible by non-experts, the documented history and rationale for creating and extending the EAD is particularly relevant for creating a digital archive about digital archives. The effort to create a data structure standard for preserving and accessing archival objects and records was largely the work of Daniel Pitti, co-director of IATH and former librarian at the University of California Berkeley. EAD was developed under Pitti’s tutelage at UC Berkeley and he has continued his expansion of EAD with the recently added schema, EAD-CFP. The site explains why SGML was chosen as best standard for encoding archival documents and also generally describes how it works (it helps create a DTD, which is a document type definition, a template that guides and standardizes archival description. It works as a digital form of preservation).

Description
An account of the resource
Preservation in the archive involves the process of historical representation and connotes security, safety, and assurance that the collections will remain intact and uncorrupted for future generations to enjoy. Digital collections pose unique preservation challenges and require an assessment of risks, both material and intellectual, as part of the planning and management policies. These entries illuminate standard archival preservation practices and present future trends.

Description
An account of the resource
Tyler Walters, archivist, librarian and associate dean of Virginia Tech’s technology and information resources, discusses the nature and responsibilities of academic librarians as they undertake the collection and curation of digital content. He cites several projects, partnerships, strategic alliances, and collaborations between academic institutions in order to coordinate efforts to preserve and disseminate large-scale digital archiving projects. Some of the principles discussed in this report include: mutual commitment to long-term preservation; collaboration to adopt policies and procedures that will sustain the archive to the benefit of its collection owners and institution and commitment to high standards for metadata and content. Walters also discusses several applications and systems used for designing archives and user tools, including DSpace, Fedora, and CDL’s Curation Center.

The Changing Landscape of American Studies in a Global Era
Subject

Description
An account of the resource
In this white paper, Levander discusses opportunities for interdisciplinary scholarship that are unique to digital archives. Unlike the interdisciplinary regional studies prior to the mass digitization of primary sources and the Internet, current regional studies can truly adopt a global perspective, accessing data from several national archives and digital libraries—no longer limited to strictly U.S. American-created sources.
Levander notes how the digital archive is transforming scholarly research in essentially four ways: (1) the volume of available transnational data from an international array of archives and libraries is too vast for traditional methods of culling data, (2) that data recording geographic places and changes over time are represented in “spatialtemporal” databases that also provide new tools of analysis for researching cross-national and cross-cultural trends, (3) that creation of an international, hemispheric or transnational research community fosters collaboration across national, time and disciplinary boundaries, and (4) geographical and temporal databases can reshape traditional genres of literature and regional studies.
Levander states, “Digital archives can offer new opportunities for rethinking the nation-state as the organizing rubric for literary and cultural history of the Americas,” and she reminds the reader of the correspondence between the history of print and the development of nation-states (30). The digital archive provides tools for representing and visualizing data from phenomena including environmental, archaeological, and technological changes over time.

Research Agenda for Digital Scholarship
Subject
The topic of the resource
Digital humanities
Description
An account of the resource
One of the major issues facing humanities scholars is access to data for reuse or repurposing. Data used in the humanities encompasses the broad and diverse humanities disciplines. The types of research conducted in a digital environment are based on each discipline's history and methods of practice. Friedlander, however, believes there is sufficient common ground among the individual disciplines that a shared infrastructure of tools, services, and collections would be cost and energy efficient, as well as producing fresh insights and opportunities for greater collaboration. She describes the technical tools and applications for accessing data, and identifies critical questions for researchers regarding the scale of their projects and networks of communication. Friedlander persuasively argues that the size or type of institution is not as important as the shared values and standard protocols among the collaborating groups.

Archivists’ Values and Value
in the Postmodern Age
Subject

Description
An account of the resource
In this article, Greene eschews the "intuitive, informal, and cookbooky" approach to information infrastructure and advises archivists to base their work on core professional values (22). He recommends beginning a digital archive project with well-planned policies of selection and collection criteria. Greene also discusses the importance of "activism"—"active shaping of the historical record" and "advocacy of archival issues and values in a variety of settings including the political arena" (25). By defining archivists as activists, Greene contends they are not neutral and that become interpreters and shapers of content when they select and preserve archival materials. In addition to discussing core values, he advocates aggressive pursuit of funding, while also educating the public on the importance of maintaining an open archive in a democratic society.

Strategies for Building Digitized Collections

Description
An account of the resource
Abby Smith combines the collective experiences of digital library staffs over the past decade as she analyzes and reviews selected practices, identifies selection policies and best practices, and discusses long-term implications of the opportunities and constraints that shape the digital library collections of “first-generation” digital libraries. First generation refers to libraries that “have been engaged in significant digitization for a while.” However, she did analyze a few libraries that were just beginning to develop their own digitization programs. Her purpose was to look at libraries and complete an analysis of significant achievements that made it possible to identify good practices and benchmarks for success. In her conclusion, she explains that libraries need a clear sense of how a digital project fits their mission. One of the elements Smith examines is cost, since many libraries need funding to cover digital costs; however, she contends that there are numerous benefits, such as the amount of knowledge gained by staff about their own collections and those of other colleges, the protection of materials while increasing the access to the content, and the satisfaction of the patrons. In looking to the future, Smith believes digitization must clearly be an integral part of the core mission of the library who chooses these projects, and many factors remain for libraries to consider, such as the development of technical specifications, the management of storage, and the discovery of outside finds, and the need to discover how digitization will add value to source material.

Description
An account of the resource
Roy Rosenzweig contends that the past is not dead. His book, Clio Wired, is a collection of essays focusing on the digital media and how it could keep the past alive. Simplistically, it is broken into three sections: rethinking, practicing, and surveying. The first section, Rethinking History in New Media, focuses on preservation and the use of the internet and digital tools for scholarship. Rosenberg considers what should be preserved and who is responsible for this preservation. In addition, he explores the authority of digital knowledge, new research methods for digital media, and amateur historians from professional historians in a digital realm. Practicing History in New Media: Teaching, Researching, Presenting, Collecting, which is the second section in the book, encompasses how to practice history in the field of digital media. The essays within this section range from teaching methods in the classroom, how to collect history online, using hypertext in scholarly journals, and the open access of scholarly research. The final section in the book, Surveying History in New Media, discusses the future of digital media. His focus is on the advantages of digitization, and he believes in the near future the most important bodies of knowledge will be online, such as in archives.

Description
An account of the resource
Pitti’s article focuses on the necessity of collaboration among scholars, despite the challenges they encounter. In order to design complex, sustainable projects in digital humanities, collaboration is necessary because of the cost and the familiarity required with both the research subject and the technologies. Pitti discusses the advantages and challenges connected with collaboration. The primary advantage of collaboration is that a group of scholars can create “research collections more intellectually complex and comprehensive than is possible for an individual.” However, Pitti also examines some of the challenges, such as individual interests versus shared objectives, creating guidelines for the project, and differing levels of technological abilities. He offers some solutions to these obstacles, and he insists that collaboration will enable greater productivity.

What is an Archive?
Description
An account of the resource
Archives are collections of primary sources, cataloged and grouped for the purpose of preserving and making accessible the records of society’s cultural and historic heritage. Laura Millar, noted archivist and author of Archives principles and practices, defines the mission of archives “to acquire, preserve and make available the documentary memory of society…”(Millar 2010). These entries will focus on the explanation and description of an archive and why they are important to society. What does it mean to be an archive and what is the value of an archive?

Description
An account of the resource
Jimerson argues that in the information age, knowledge is power, and power is determined by those who determine what information will be preserved for the future, i.e., archivists. Therefore, archivists should use their power to benefit all members of society. He contends that archivists should adopt a social conscience and “promote accountability, open government, diversity, and social justice.” In addition, this social conscience can be implemented through objectivity (he explains the difference between objectivity and neutrality) in which archivists can address social issues without abandoning their professional standards and values. He says their role does not prohibit political advocacy, and Jimerson argues that archivists have both a moral and a professional responsibility to balance the power of the status quo with that of the marginalized. Therefore, they should help restore social wrongs and support the causes for justice and community consciousness among these marginalized groups. They should be public advocates and agents of change because they have a collective responsibility to ensure the preservation of information (or evidence) for “accountability, individual rights, and social justice.” Jimerson believes archivists has two main goals: (1) reflect diverse societies and give a voice to those marginalized, and (2) increase professional membership among marginalized groups. And, these commitments must be international in order to be effective.
