Description
An account of the resource
"Introduced by Clive Phillpot, and including artists and writers such as Gustav Metzger, Bruce McLean, Barbara Steveni, John Latham, Barry Flanagan, Edward Burra, Penelope Curtis, and Neal White, All This Stuff breaks new ground in the field of archive theory. It documents the innovative ways in which the arts are challenging the distinctions, processes, and crossovers between artworks and archives. This critical reexamination exemplifies how the field of art archiving is changing theory and practice as well as our understanding of what an archive is, or could be. Valuable insights are given into the archival process and the book also explores how archives can be made accessible and the unpredictable ways in which they may be explored and reinterpreted in the future.

An Ethical Perspective on Political-Economic Issues in the Long-Term Preservation of Digital Heritage
Subject
The topic of the resource
Web Archiving
Description
An account of the resource
This article considers long-term preservation of digital heritage from a social justice perspective, with a specific focus on ethical obligations for archivists in first world countries. The authors envision two fictional scenarios to illustrate their argument: in the first example, digital archivists located in a wealthy first-world country “harvest” web content created in an economically disadvantaged country without consent. In the second scenario, archivists in the same first-world country offer to digitize content from a third-world archive and propose a contract that allows both sides access to the digital archive. Lor and Britz argue that in both cases, first world archivists have a systemic advantage, and what they offer is not a collaboration, but essentially exploitation. Drawing on a broad variety of ethical frameworks, Lor and Britz attempt to offer a comprehensive catalogue of moral considerations for fair and equal forms of collaboration.

Archive 2.0: What Composition Students and Academic Libraries Can Gain from Digital-Collaborative Pedagogies
Description
An account of the resource
Participation in digital archives and collaborative digital environments, according to Vetter, can lead to increased student motivation, rhetorical awareness, and an increased awareness of library resources and the concepts of public information, while serving as stewards of the genesis and preservation of public knowledge. The research project began through the desire to produce and evaluate an assignment that designed and measured “collaborative-digital pedagogy,” directly engaging composition students with library services and special collections with the aim of increasing student awareness and usage of library services, and special collections for future research. Vetter constructed the study with the hypothesis that Kenneth Bruffee’s concept of peer learning, a cornerstone of composition pedagogy, could be enacted and extended through the design and implementation of activities that utilize collaborative technologies in the classroom and eventually engage a broader network of collaborators in an online environment like Wikipedia. Citing one particular student’s experience as a case study, Vetter attempts to illustrate the pedagogic value of providing students with the opportunity to collaborate with multiple individuals during the course of a service learning project. Vetter also discusses the potential of such exercises to teach the rhetorical situation, notably the concepts of authority and authorship, as well as the factors of motivation that accompany such unique learning models and environments.

In this episode of the archive the host, Megan Eatman, speaks to members of the Digital Writing and Research Lab’s Digital Archiving group alongside co-chair Rappaport’s Center’s Human Rights Archive Working Group. They discuss their various approaches and struggles when it comes to the world of digital archiving. The episode typically focuses on the challenges of having to build an entire digital archiving website from scratch and their struggles with making sure they are gathering the necessary different forms of media that are seen as necessary for creating an authentic and efficient digital archiving platform. This episode of this podcast is a great addition to the archiving website because you hear first hand experiences of experts in the field of archiving go into details on the struggles they face that are typical struggles that most of us will most likely have to deal with in the realm of digital archiving. Not only do they speak about their own personal experiences, they give advice to others through a variety of given questions submitted by listeners who plan on being involved.

Description
An account of the resource
One of the major issues facing humanities scholars is access to data for reuse or repurposing. Data used in the humanities encompasses the broad and diverse humanities disciplines. The types of research conducted in a digital environment are based on each discipline's history and methods of practice. Friedlander, however, believes there is sufficient common ground among the individual disciplines that a shared infrastructure of tools, services, and collections would be cost and energy efficient, as well as producing fresh insights and opportunities for greater collaboration. She describes the technical tools and applications for accessing data, and identifies critical questions for researchers regarding the scale of their projects and networks of communication. Friedlander persuasively argues that the size or type of institution is not as important as the shared values and standard protocols among the collaborating groups.

Description
An account of the resource
In sizing up the notion of public memory, rhetoricians would be remiss not to consider the increasing influence of new media on today's remembrance culture. This article addresses memorial functions of the internet in light of recent scholarly debates about virtues and drawbacks of modern 'archival memory' as well as the paradoxical link between the contemporary public obsession with memory and the acceleration of amnesia. To explore the strengths and limitations of the internet as a vehicle of collecting, preserving, and displaying traces of the past, the article examines The September 11 Digital Archive, a comprehensive online effort to document public involvement in recording and commemorating the tragedy of 11 September, 2001.

Born Digital: The 21st Century Archive in Practice and Theory

Description
An account of the resource
Digital libraries, museums, and archives have discovered a beneficial partnership with law enforcement. Digital forensics as a method for extracting “unaltered evidence” and establishing “verifiable and repeatable examinations” of the data has been adopted by several digital archives ingesting and processing born digital artefacts. In a panel presentation featuring noted archivists, librarians, and curators, the authors discuss the application of digital forensics and the consequential effects on archival practices. While maintaining the provenance and original context of the born digital object’s origin and use is still of paramount importance, the authors view the computer as the creator’s workstation and a “complex archival object” in itself. Developing finding aids and a database for recreating the virtual work-study requires not just technical facility and familiarity with the author’s work, but also involves understanding the needs and interests of researchers and scholars. All digital files associated with the author’s final editions are considered integral to understanding the creative process and thus, archivists are also collaborating with users of the archive to develop a prototype for ingesting born digital objects. An additional benefit of applying digital forensics to archiving is learning how to represent unpublished, digital ephemera, opening the possibility for representing creative works by marginalized populations.

Bringing Preservation to the Forefront: Preservation Initiatives as the University of Central Florida Libraries
Description
An account of the resource
This article addresses the preservation needs of an ever-expanding university. Preserving collections is an expensive effort that necessitates collaboration and ample patience. When preservation is not “a natural part of the institutional culture” (16), implementing a new preservation program requires approval from administration and agreement from all departments of the university. Most important are “clear policy statements” and goals (16). When creating these foundations, all areas of the library must be represented. Success is “dependent on understanding the importance of having a plan and developing a shared vision from the organization” (16). It is necessary to review what other universities are doing and create a list of justifications. UCF also surveyed employees to determine areas of improvement and training needs. They had to consider environmental concerns and lack of personnel. Records had to be updated to meet current standards. Many digital records had to be created to protect originals. Arthur and Dotson write, “Digital preservation is not a passing fad… it should be one of the top priorities” (18).

Description
An account of the resource
In this article, the author presents the connection between personal digital archiving and community-based archiving and how they should work to assist one another. The author suggests that community-based projects can help provide flexibility and sustainability. Han uses an assessment of two community archive projects as an example to how they can support personal digital archive projects while maintaining long-term preservation and avoiding breaking their laid out objectives. The author proposes three ways community-based projects can help personal digital archives because Han believes collaboration between these groups is mutually beneficial and good for the community.
I believe this journal is an excellent addition to the archive because, beyond being recently published, it also presents ideas on how two aspects of archiving can connect and help one another. I think this is also important to consider in other ways archiving can cross over. The author’s connection between personal digital archiving and community-based archiving not only makes sense, but should be obvious. Encouraging community members to share their stories for their platform to be promoted by the community archive seems like an obvious idea. Han even includes how minorities who have been left out of archives can be considered and included in the future through their own archives.
