The article presents the views of authors on ethics related to scholarly research. One author stated that it is not always ethical to collect oral histories, but there are also ethical concerns when a historian feasts in the archives. While another author considers whether the institutionalized ethics of historical research can blind historians to the deeper and more fundamental ethical demands of working with the past.

Ethnic archiving has evolved and developed based on organizations, communities, collections, and preservation tactics in order to access their cultural heritage. Institutions such as libraries, archives, museums and other areas of documented history use ethnic archiving to document immigration and ethnicity in the U.S. and Canada. However, the issue of using ethnic archiving as historical practice and research begins to impact archivists in terms of create a challenge to record historical documentation. Specifically regarding the impact of ethnic archivists on the very ethnicity and cultural heritages they are trying to preserve and study, archival science is explored in terms of new archival methods and intent.

Keeping the Culture: Archiving and the 21st Century
Subject

Description
An account of the resource
The issue pertaining to archiving in a digital age is the mass amount of information that cannot all be archived. Therefore the question of what is to be recorded is necessary, for preserving all information would not be ideal in terms of curating a cultural conception for future historical research.
Also posing a problem is our society's tendency to rely on selected decisions over our own assertions due to our multicultural and pluralistic ways. However it has become apparent that with the increase in the input of data, we need to become selective in terms of deciding what should and should not be in our cultural archives rather than recording all aspects of society.
Also covered as of high importance is the need to migrate data from one medium to another, such as literature to technology, or copying computer files into a compatible software. The issue arises that many technologies of the past require a specific form of playback function, such as VCR tapes or cassettes, creating the need for the previously needed migration of formats.
The main contributor to the mass collection of information needed to be sifted through in a selection process is the growth of commercial activity. Companies will need to evolve into a more preservation-aware consciousness and the relationships between these companies and technological institutions will increase with this need.

Ethics and Truth in Archival Research
Subject
The topic of the resource
Collective Memory
Description
An account of the resource
The complexities of the ethics and truth in archival research are often unrecognized or invisible in educational research. The archival research for this paper took place in the former Czechoslovakia and its turbulent political history influenced the way data were accessed and collected. The article analyzes the productive power of archival institutions and their guardians, and examines the ethical dilemma of discovering sensitive information. Archival institutions hold the secrets that, once uncovered, can have powerful ramifications. It will be argued that the nature of truth in the archives is complex, and the author complicates and challenges the perception that archives are ethically neutral research spaces that do not need to consider approval from research ethics committees.

Description
An account of the resource
The authors of this book argue that libraries are institutions of human rights and social justice and should fully embrace this role. They outline ways in which preservation institutions can integrate social justice and human rights in their practice and policies. Jaeger et al. start out by introducing the notions of social justice and human rights, and historically trace how the two concepts intersect with information and literacy. Then, they examine how policies and regulations for library and preservation institutions implement human rights today. Examples of current practices illustrate what that entails. The authors also address reasons why libraries have struggled with incorporating social justice in some ways, and finally propose ways in which such obstacles can be overcome.

Description
An account of the resource
In this podcast, Jefferson Bailey of the New York Library Council and Joshua Ranger of Audiovisual Preservation Solutions discuss ways in which archivists can preserve documentation of activism. They interview Grace Lile and Yvonne Ng, both of whom are archivists at the international non-profit organization WITNESS, which focuses on using video as a medium for human rights documentation and advocacy. Lile and Ng describe the archive at WITNESS, emphasizing that in human rights work, the safety and security of people have to be prioritized over access, as creators’ and interviewees’ lives may be in danger. Thus, human rights archiving requires close collaboration with creators and producers, and the appraisal process must entail a variety of considerations regarding safety. Lile and Ng therefore see the archive not so much as a place to store information on the past, but, in the context of activism specifically, as part of the process of creation.

An Ethical Perspective on Political-Economic Issues in the Long-Term Preservation of Digital Heritage
Subject
The topic of the resource
Web Archiving
Description
An account of the resource
This article considers long-term preservation of digital heritage from a social justice perspective, with a specific focus on ethical obligations for archivists in first world countries. The authors envision two fictional scenarios to illustrate their argument: in the first example, digital archivists located in a wealthy first-world country “harvest” web content created in an economically disadvantaged country without consent. In the second scenario, archivists in the same first-world country offer to digitize content from a third-world archive and propose a contract that allows both sides access to the digital archive. Lor and Britz argue that in both cases, first world archivists have a systemic advantage, and what they offer is not a collaboration, but essentially exploitation. Drawing on a broad variety of ethical frameworks, Lor and Britz attempt to offer a comprehensive catalogue of moral considerations for fair and equal forms of collaboration.

An account of the resource
In this TEDx talk, Jamie Robinson, photographer at the John Rylands University Library in Manchester, England, gives an introduction to heritage imaging and collection care. Robinson starts out by summarizing the history of the JRU Library archive, while showing examples of early digital images. He defines heritage imaging as “creating digital surrogates of material that requires sensitive handling”, adding that such material is mainly of historical or cultural importance and therefore relevant to research. He then moves on to explain kinds of tools and technologies that are currently used in digitization and collection care, and elaborating on the technical processes the material undergoes throughout its lifecycle. Robinson repeatedly emphasizes the significance of such technologies in various fields: for instance, digital technologies can help read documents that otherwise have become illegible, thus aiding archeologists and historians retrieve lost material.
