First generation refers to libraries that “have been engaged in significant digitization for a while.” However, she did analyze a few libraries that were just beginning to develop their own digitization programs. Her purpose was to look at libraries and complete an analysis of significant achievements that made it possible to identify good practices and benchmarks for success. Because of this they have a vast collection of historical items, including music, rosters, newspaper clippings, and every single program. The New York Philharmonic has reflected the cultural and political events throughout their history. Their music can also be traced through the advent of historically new mediums. Music lovers from around the world have frequented their physical archives. Therefore, they feel that it is necessary to digitize their archives. They will spend the next three (now about two) years digitizing thousands of archives so that they can be accessed by anyone at any time. In this way, student conductors can study videos of the best conductors, as well as see their notes on the music itself at the same time. The archive allows one to see priceless information in one place and to listen while viewing the music, program, or roster. It explores six digital archives that were funded through the Library of Congress’ National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program to collaborate with each other. Building relationships amongst archivists is time-consuming. The most important factor in these relationships is trust. However, the experience shows that the benefits of collaboration far outweigh the costs. Collaboration allows professionals to work from a common knowledge base. It creates better relationships with data providers and software developers. And it allows for networked collections with common standards. He distinguishes archives and their need for creating a stable and faithful finding aid for the collections (fonds) from libraries and their need for specific item and location descriptions. Unlike library records, archival records must also provide greater detail and contextual information; including the origin or provenance of the item and its order of creation within the collection.
