Laura Millar, noted archivist and author of Archives principles and practices, defines the mission of archives “to acquire, preserve and make available the documentary memory of society…”(Millar 2010). The Library of Congress and Personal Digital Archiving by Mike Ashenfield was produced and released on May 5th, 2015. It is an open source instruction and informational guide on various personal digital archiving resources. There is a total of 300 pages with various different categories to sectionalize the information being presented. For example, some categorizations are by social media. According to the presentation, different social media contain various functions in regarding how they like to cite and source their resources. In addition, it provides the history and origins of digital archiving and why it is necessary for saving data and information over time. This informational presentation is provided by the Library of Congress, allowing it to be an open access program available for viewing and download by the public. This item can be a very essential item to add because it is categorized in a very sleek and concise manner. It is a very simplistic but informational guide that can be used to aid anyone from students to professors when teaching and instruction lessons on digital archiving. It’s overall purpose is to ensure that the public continues being informed on the processes and value of digital archiving so that information can be digitized and preserved for future generations to come.

This paper presents a case study of utilizing the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) format to encode rare and special collections at the McGill University library. The theme of this case study is the TEI’s flexible encoding format that was able to meet the objectives of the digital archives. The authors present a brief introduction into the scope of the project along with allocated resources. Next, the digitizing process is outlined, incorporating how the TEI encoding format was modified for the special format of chapbooks. The authors included a new subject categorization scheme in the metadata; this scheme was generally recognized in literature. Two major challenges were reported: assigning a large number of encoding elements and each level’s detail. Overall, the project was a success providing 933 texts available for the general public.

In their article, Cushman and Ghosh examine two different types of digital media used to represent culturally sensitive and significant artifacts: a classical dance of India represented by an avatar in Second Life, and the tribal Stomp dance of the Cherokee Nation represented to the public through text, only. They approach their study from an ethical and aesthetic point of view, questioning whether digital media transforms cultural expression and to what extent digital technologies can be used to both preserve sacred content and extend the community’s cultural memory. Cushman and Ghosh undergird their investigation with Jacque Derrida’s studies of linguistics and semiotics and to concepts of mediation by such theorists as Jay David Bolter and N. Katherine Hayles. They assert that the digital technologies used to represent cultural history must serve, reinforce, and preserve the cultural values embedded in both the structure of the site and the digital tools supplied to engage its artifacts. Cushman and Ghosh discover that the mediation (digital technologies) shapes and enhances cultural memory, although at a cost. Sacred dances, as one example, become disembodied through digital mediation due to the absence of a live audience in face-to-face proximity. The authors report that whereas digital representations of sacred cultural objects or events cannot provide the full embodiment necessary for establishing cultural memory, there are benefits to digitizing cultural heritage, including the educational value of making ancient culture accessible to the world.

Early developers of digital resources often had little thought for how their projects might dovetail with others. Today many of these projects suffer from this lack of forethought; they cannot be extended for broader use, they cannot be built upon by others and the chances are slim that they will survive into the future. More recently, the cultural community has begun to realize the importance of applying technical and information standards intelligently and consistently. The use of such standards not only adds longevity and scalability to the project’s life cycle, but also enables an ever widening public to discover and use its digital resources. One of the goals of this Guide to Good Practice is to show the critical importance for the community of moving beyond the narrow vision of these early project-based enthusiasts and thinking through what is needed to establish sustainable programs. By adopting community shared good practice, project designers can ensure the broadest use of their materials, today and in the future, by audiences they may not even have imagined and by future applications that will dynamically recombine ‘digital objects’ into new resources. They can ensure the quality, consistency and reliability of a project’s digital resources and make them compatible with resources from other projects and domains, building on the work of others. Such projects can be produced economically and can be maintained and managed into the future with maximum benefit for all. In short, good practice can be measured by any one project’s ability to maximize a resource’s intended usefulness while minimizing the cost of its subsequent management and use. Within the cultural and educational communities, there are today many different types of guides to good practice written for particular disciplines, institution types or specific standards. These include the Text Encoding Initiative’s Guidelines for Electronic Text Encoding and Interchange, Cornell University Library’s Digital Imaging
for Libraries and Archives, the Digital Library Federation’s Guides to Quality in Visual Resource Imaging, the Getty Trust’s Introduction to Vocabularies and Introduction to Metadata and the UK’s Arts and Humanities Data Service series of discipline-based “Guides to Good Practice.” In creating the National Digital Library, the Library of Congress has been assiduous in providing documentation and discussion of its practices; similarly, the National Archives has published its internal “Guidelines for Digitizing Archival Materials for Electronic Access,” and the Colorado Digitization Project has brought together in a web portal a wide-ranging collection of administrative, technical, copyright and funding resources"

In a modern media environment in which fake news is widely disseminated amongst the public and previously trusted media sources are viewed with suspicion, those in the archival profession are tasked with finding methods with which fake news can be preserved. The value in preservation lies in cultural context, which, conversely, remains the as the most daunting issue archivists face in this subject. This article considers the obstacles involving archiving fake news that differ from the archiving of any other piece of information, namely, the need for an archive to include enough sources to create enough context for future contributors and researchers to understand the items preserved.

In this article, Greene eschews the "intuitive, informal, and cookbooky" approach to information infrastructure and advises archivists to base their work on core professional values (22). He recommends beginning a digital archive project with well-planned policies of selection and collection criteria. Greene also discusses the importance of "activism"—"active shaping of the historical record" and "advocacy of archival issues and values in a variety of settings including the political arena" (25). By defining archivists as activists, Greene contends they are not neutral and that become interpreters and shapers of content when they select and preserve archival materials. In addition to discussing core values, he advocates aggressive pursuit of funding, while also educating the public on the importance of maintaining an open archive in a democratic society.

Also known as risk management, archives must anticipate potential infringements of intellectual property and privacy rights, and guard the public's right to free and open access. Items in the collection address risk management issues and underscore the necessity for keeping current in legal and ethical archival practices.
