This article addresses the preservation needs of an ever-expanding university. Preserving collections is an expensive effort that necessitates collaboration and ample patience. When preservation is not “a natural part of the institutional culture” (16), implementing a new preservation program requires approval from administration and agreement from all departments of the university. Most important are “clear policy statements” and goals (16). When creating these foundations, all areas of the library must be represented. Success is “dependent on understanding the importance of having a plan and developing a shared vision from the organization” (16). It is necessary to review what other universities are doing and create a list of justifications. UCF also surveyed employees to determine areas of improvement and training needs. They had to consider environmental concerns and lack of personnel. Records had to be updated to meet current standards. Many digital records had to be created to protect originals. Arthur and Dotson write, “Digital preservation is not a passing fad… it should be one of the top priorities” (18).

Within this academic journal, Wasson et al provides the reader with both research and findings from their self-conducted workshop that sparks conversation between “fields of user-centered design (UCD) and language archives” (Wasson et al). Within the article itself, there is emphasis on the challenges of digital archiving in regard to language archiving, navigating cultural practices, and then using the understanding of these concepts to make informed archive design decisions. These concepts all arise within their workshop, “User-Centered Design of Language Archives.” Specifically, a very important discovery that is made within the workshop is how, “most language archives are not meeting the needs of most users” (Wasson et al).
I found the information within this article and, further, within their study, to be extremely informative of and pertinent to the study of digital archiving and the challenges that arise from the format of language. The focus on the user and user-based design is a step towards personalizing and adapting existing archives while also setting a new standard for language archives. As mentioned prior, this study not only analyzed existing archives, but it also uncovered flaws within the archiving practice. This showcases the relevancy and need for this study and I believe it also warrants the inclusion of such an item within the showcase.

In this article, the author presents the connection between personal digital archiving and community-based archiving and how they should work to assist one another. The author suggests that community-based projects can help provide flexibility and sustainability. Han uses an assessment of two community archive projects as an example to how they can support personal digital archive projects while maintaining long-term preservation and avoiding breaking their laid out objectives. The author proposes three ways community-based projects can help personal digital archives because Han believes collaboration between these groups is mutually beneficial and good for the community.
I believe this journal is an excellent addition to the archive because, beyond being recently published, it also presents ideas on how two aspects of archiving can connect and help one another. I think this is also important to consider in other ways archiving can cross over. The author’s connection between personal digital archiving and community-based archiving not only makes sense, but should be obvious. Encouraging community members to share their stories for their platform to be promoted by the community archive seems like an obvious idea. Han even includes how minorities who have been left out of archives can be considered and included in the future through their own archives.

This conference by Meyer et al discusses the concept of digital archive building and the best methods to, “search for an applicable and adequate data or document model [and] software tools which meets the requirements” (Meyer et al) of making digital library applications. Within their conference, they explained how there is not an ideal document model or system, there is not a “one-size-fits-all” (Meyer et al), but that each document model or system is unique to the information that is being digitally archived. This conference goes in-depth on the technical implementation of aspects of a digital archive, factors that will ultimately determine the sustainability and the maintenance of the archive. These ideas are all included within the “digital archive project DARL (Digitales Archiv Rostocker Liederbuch, engl.)” (Meyer et al).
I found the information found within this conference pertinent to the overall understanding of a digital archive. I think that it can be easy to lose sight of how archives, while they have the same goal and purpose, are all unique and, thus, made differently. Understanding how an archive is made is extremely important and this resource helps readers to understand the technical side of design decisions that impact an archive in big ways.

This article asks if it is worth the time and resources to collaborate with other digital archives. It explores six digital archives that were funded through the Library of Congress’ National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program to collaborate with each other. Building relationships amongst archivists is time-consuming. The most important factor in these relationships is trust. However, the experience shows that the benefits of collaboration far outweigh the costs. Collaboration allows professionals to work from a common knowledge base. It creates better relationships with data providers and software developers. And it allows for networked collections with common standards. Similarly, often, digital archives have certain strengths and weaknesses that complement each other. Working together allows digital archives to accomplish much more than if they were working alone. For these reasons, the authors argue that collaboration is essential to any digital archiving project.

Campus Guides. ACURIL 2011: The Role of Libraries and Archives in Disaster Preparedness, Response and Research
Description
An account of the resource
Hosted by the University of South Florida Libraries, this conference on the role of libraries an archives in disaster preparedness and response speaks to one of the ways that libraries and archives are so important to the preservation of cultural items and information not only for the future, but in light of natural disasters that may occur to damage those culturally important items. Items are presented in the three official languages of the conference: English, Spanish, and French to represent the international involvement and cooperation of the conference. Along with American universities in the Gulf of Mexico region, the conference is headed by the ACIRIL (Association of Caribbean University, Research and Institutional Libraries). Sessions of the conference include topics such as standards for digitization that would allow information to be accessed by other institutions should the need arise, and how health and disaster preparedness information can be archived by libraries for use by the public. Using libraries and archives as ‘information centers’ for the public during a time of disaster can work in collaboration with government and organizational efforts to assist recovery.
